Social Share Port Of Spain – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders Thursday pledged their ongoing commitment to help St Vincent and the Grenadines deal with the impact of an erupting La Soufriere volcano that has so far resulted in the evacuation of thousands of residents on the Caribbean island. A statement issued after the regional leaders met virtually under the chairmanship of Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, noted that the special emergency meeting “committed to continue providing extensive support to St Vincent and the Grenadines and pledged solidarity with that member state as it strove to cope with the disaster”.

Hotels in St Kitts & Nevis offer accommodation for SVG evacuees Social Share SEVERAL HOTELS in St. Kitts and Nevis have stepped forward to support the government’s relief efforts to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the wake of the ongoing La Soufrière volcano eruptions, a release stated. As part of a humanitarian package, St. Kitts and Nevis government has offered to receive 3- hundred persons who were displaced as a result of the volcanic eruption in SVG Abdias Samuel, National Disaster Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said that accommodation commitments have already been made. Koi Resort St. Kitts has made available 70 rooms that can accommodate two to three persons while the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, as well as the Sugar Bay Club has identified 30 rooms each. That brings the total available rooms to 130 in St. Kitts. A hotel in Nevis has also committed 30 rooms to the humanitarian assistance programme.

They committed to continue providing extensive support to St Vincent and the Grenadines and pledged solidarity with that Member State as it strove to cope with the disaster. The volcano erupted on Friday 9 April and has been spewing ash and emitting pyroclastic flows. Dr the Honourable Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines briefed his colleague Leaders on the situation at the meeting which was held virtually. It was presided over by the Chair of the Conference of Heads of Government Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
