Uncertain what 2021 will bring after a year of empty Metra trains, roads, airports and state coffers, thanks to COVID-19?
Fear not. Five experts have gazed into their crystal balls and offer predictions starting with domestic air travel bouncing back in June.
Airlines suffered a hit in 2020, but the confidence imbued by the (COVID-19) vaccines will encourage many who had previously been reluctant to once again take to the skies, DePaul University professor Joseph Schwieterman said.
There are nuances. Travel to densely populated cities will lag behind sunny vacation spots. People will still have hang-ups about traveling to major cities through late 2021, despite vaccines, added Schwieterman, director of DePaul s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.
A better south-side connection
This summer Tucsonans saw the years-long Interstate 19 and Ajo Way interchange completed. The improvements include widening Ajo Way and the southbound lanes on I-19 and adding an auxiliary lane for northbound traffic from Irvington Road to Ajo.
Two new bridges at Michigan Street and the Santa Cruz River went up in the area. Crews also installed sound walls to protect adjacent neighborhoods from the busy roadway.
Crews had been working on the projectâs Phase 2 since July 2018.

Barrington s Town-Warming event will have its most prominent keynote speaker to date, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in a Zoom event with more affordable ticket prices than usual.
The theme of the Jan. 23 event will be What Now? Looking Ahead to the Post-Pandemic World. Another keynote speaker will be William M. Daley, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
