Drivers and industries from Rockhampton to Emerald are reaping the benefits of the jointly funded $19 million Capricorn Highway overtaking lanes project.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government’s $15.2 million commitment was a significant investment in road safety and the Central Queensland road network.
“The Capricorn Highway forms part of Australia’s Key Freight Road Network and Queensland’s Priority Freight Network, connecting the Bruce Highway in the east and the Landsborough Highway in the west,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

A new building blitz at intersections around the state will focus on improving safety for families and school children at over 55 schools, shopping strips and intersections.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the jointly funded $19.5 million Pedestrian and Safer Schools Program will roll out across regional and urban Victoria from early next year.
“The program will see a combination of electronic speed limit signs, pedestrian operated lights, raised zebra crossings and pedestrian islands installed in busy and high-risk areas to help pedestrians, school children, cyclists and motorists share the roads safely,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.
The funding was delivered under the Australian Government’s Regional Airports Screening Infrastructure grant program.
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry said she was pleased to see Rockhampton Airport receive the funding.
Ms Landry said the funding would help the airport meet the Australian Government’s security requirements for travellers.
“This is great news as we look to get more and more tourists into Central Queensland, supporting local aviation jobs, backing our hard-hit sectors like tourism and getting funds flowing across the community to drive our economic recovery,” she said. The Childers community and tourists alike are set to benefit from a new playground at Apex Tramway Park which has been officially opened.
Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the need for a suitable playground for younger children was raised with him by the Childers community.
âIâm pleased the Federal Government has been able to help fund this new playground, which complements the playground across the road in Millennium Park,â Mr Pitt said.
âAs well as the new playground, which has a shade covering, there is seating, signage and pedestrian access pathways.
âThis will create a real hub in the Childers CBD to be enjoyed by families with children of different ages and is adjacent to the RV parking area on Crescent St, so visitors to the region can use the facilities also.â
