Last week councillors backed a change to the county development plan following pressure from the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) and the council executive. The removal of the airport objective was also urged by planning and development expert Fergal McCabe. Instead of specific reference to an airport, the draft county development plan, which is scheduled for final adoption in September, will say the council supports the provision of a green international trade and distribution zone based on international air connectivity, in either Offaly or the Midlands.

Details of the allocation, under the Regional State Airports Programme 2021, has been announced by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton A further €4,781,193 has been allocated to Donegal, Ireland West (Knock) and Kerry airports under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025. The money will be used to contribute towards capital investment in the areas of safety, security and sustainability at the four airports. Shannon Airport itself will provide a level of top-up matching funding, with the projects to be completed this year.

Another more than €6.3m has been allocated to Shannon Airport under the Covid-19 Regional State Airports Programme 2021. Announcing the new funds, Minister of State at the Department of Transport Hildegarde Naughton said that the country s regional airports have experienced an incredibly difficult year. This funding represents a strong commitment by Government to help Ireland s regional airports remain financially sustainable as they plan to move beyond the largest exogenous shock that the sector has ever faced, Ms Naughton said.
