The closing of the velodrome is indeed a tragic result for our city. Whatever your point of view the residents of Whanganui must surely be wondering how the district council has allowed our world-class velodrome, an asset of the city, to deteriorate to the point of closure.
How has this happened after the spending of public money on all the reports and reviews?
Five years ago I remember talking with the volunteers involved in the Regional Velodrome Development Trust who have been trying their best not only to protect the velodrome by having it covered but develop it into a multi-purpose facility for the whole region.

The long-awaited release of an independent report into the roofing the Whanganui velodrome has concluded there is no current valid case to proceed with the original proposal. The report, which was completed in October, was made public on Tuesday and cited a substantial upfront cost and a lack of demand for the facilities put forward in the Copeland design, which includes expanding its use to include a new speed skating track and improving accessibility to allow crowd events of up to 6000 people.
