Annual methane emissions from abandoned oil and gas wells might be underestimated by as much as 150 per cent in Canada and 20 per cent in the U.S., according to a recent study from McGill University.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that traps over 70 times more heat over a 20-year period than an equivalent amount of carbon dioxide. In Canada, the oil and gas sector is the largest industrial polluter of methane emissions in Canada.
Although abandoned wells contribute only one to four per cent of all methane emissions from the oil and gas sector annually, that amount is equivalent to the CO2 emitted by Newfoundland and Labrador each year.
Antigonish, N.S. draws almost two-thirds of its energy from green sources, including wind power, and is striving to become Canada’s first net-zero emissions community.

Although seaweeds are estimated to have been around for 3.5 billion years, what many people don t realize is the unique and complex bioactive compounds that these marine plants contain compared to terrestrial plants. Seaweeds can provide natural nutritional and functional benefits for product formulations across the functional food, nutraceutical and cosmetics sectors.
Seaweed has evolved to contain natural antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-aging and other powerful properties. While there is still much to uncover about this versatile ingredient, the seaweed secrets we
have learned come from knowledge gained about the many species of nutritionally dense and biologically complex marine plants found in our oceans, with more continuously being discovered by researchers around the globe.
