The Little Shamrock
The Little Shamrock
Location: 807 Lincoln Way, near Ninth Avenue
Opened: 1890s The Little Shamrock at 807 Lincoln Way near Ninth Avenue is the Sunset District s oldest business, serving drinks in the same location since the 1890s. The story goes that Antone Herzo and his wife opened their pub on October 28, 1893, to serve the thirsty workmen who were creating the Midwinter Fair in Golden Gate Park. The bar recognized this date in a centennial celebration in 1993.
But a bit of research pokes some holes in the official story. (Thanks to John Freeman for his intrepid research.)
First problem: Antone Herzo died July 17, 1893 at age 38, which is quite an impediment to opening a bar three months later.

In May 2017, Yang Shuping took the podium before a packed auditorium. Sporting a black commencement gown streaked by the University of Maryland’s gold sash, Yang stood by university dean Wallace Loh as he tried to pick out Yang’s parents in the sea of seats before them. “You must feel very proud of your daughter. We certainly are proud of her,” Loh remarked as Yang’s mother stood, holding a bouquet of red roses to audience applause.
Unbeknown to them, this simple commencement ritual would spark international controversy. In keeping with the genre of the graduation ceremony, Yang’s speech mobilized tropes of struggle, hardship, triumph, and almost maudlin optimism. But filtered through her experience as a Chinese international student, Yang’s remarks presented a highly politicized affirmation of U.S.

Boxing coach, roadhouse operator, saloon keeper, and Ingleside character for over fifty years.
Barney Farley, a Character Study
by Woody LaBounty Barney Farley, athlete, boxing trainer, and saloon keeper, spinning stories from his Ocean Avenue roadhouse resort, as depicted by a newspaper artist, February 19, 1897. - San Francisco Call
In 1896, the
San Francisco Call described Bernard Farley, a pioneer of the Ingleside District’s old Ocean Road (today’s Ocean Avenue), as a “character of renown.”
I will admit to having a personal weakness for characters. My family history has its share of black sheep, whose actions may have been questionable, even reprehensible. The smoothing hand of time, however, has made petty thieves, town drunks, and bankrupt miners welcome eccentrics in my otherwise staid family tree. Tragedies of alcoholism, gambling addiction, and mental illness, far removed from one’s immediate exposure, do make for interesting reading.

In February, Black History Month, the television is full of footage of the Freedom Riders, Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lincoln Monument, and sepia-tinted interviews with heroes from the Civil Rights Movement. It s important to remember, however, that the struggle for civil rights didn t begin in the 1950s. John Martini, historian and retired National Park Service ranger, recently discovered more evidence of the long national struggle in 1890s San Francisco.
