TIMAH, Malaysia’s first whisky to be globally recognised, has again been awarded a silver, this time by the International Spirits Challenge 2020 (ISC).
The influential British-based competition received more than 1,800 entries from 70 countries and results were announced late last year.
The ISC is deemed by many of the world’s leading spirits producers as the international standard for quality and excellence, featuring blind tasting panels of more than 50 industry professionals.
Timah first made history when as the country’s first double-peated blend, it won its first silver medal in the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC), one of the oldest competitions of its kind.

By now, the whiskey drinking public knows the pandemic has put a dent in the supply and demand chain regarding spirits in America. The thirst is strong. New distilleries open daily, and not just across the Bourbon Trail of the South, but all across the country.

Now, whiskey distillers in the far reaches of the globe are ramping up production, and among the international throng is Starward, an up-and-coming distillery based in Australia. David Vitale founded the distillery in 2007 in his hometown of Melbourne. After working as business manager of a prominent Tasmanian distillery for several years, Vitale wanted to make an accessible whisky that was representative of Melbourne’s cosmopolitan character. His passion for food, wine and beer led to Starward’s original purpose of being an easy drinking whisky designed to pair well with food.

Had this year been like just about any year before it, right about now at least for those of us who live north of the Mason-Dixon line many of us would be looking forward to the holidays ahead and then, shortly thereafter, embarking on a customary mid-winter escape to locations both balmy and tropical. Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, maybe even Brazil would be calling.
