Nepal, Dec. 20 The US policy towards Nepal generally remains unchanged by the change of guard in the White House. Yet, Nepal will be affected by US attitudes towards global trends.
Joe Biden has been declared the winner of the 2020 election by the members of the US Electoral College.
This election offered a choice between two contrasting characters, with very different world views. The partisanship and domestic divide in the US presented a bleak picture. Many commentators called the US the Divided States of America . This was exacerbated by the disinformation and complete disregard for facts in political debates at the societal level, mostly through social media. Nonetheless, the election showed that personality-laden nationalist leaders can be voted out.

He read a lot of history books, threatened to punch a music columnist criticizing his daughter Margaret’s singing, kept a sign on his Oval Office desk: “The Buck Stops Here,” and insisted: “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.” Almost all presidents had dogs. Research at Duke University on dog intelligence points out that over thousands of years dogs have acquired the skills that it pays to be able to recognize human beings who are ready to share meals with you. They welcome these beneficent people with wagging tails, smiles, nose pokes, and their version of hugs.

The Electoral College hammered the final nail into the US elections this week. Joe Biden
(above) and Kamala Harris will form the next administration with 306 votes.
Their biggest challenge will not be the last kicks of the Trump/Pence administration but how to transform the Divided States of America. The steep hill ahead of them is instructive for Kenya as well.
In weeks leading up to the US elections, many Kenyans argued openly that the Republicans would carry the day. Mainstream American public was too racist and rightist to not grant Donald Trump another four-year term, so their argument went.
A number of election officials and elected representatives - public workers who are just trying to do their job by defending the outcome of the presidential vote - are having to seek security because of threats made against them by angry Trump supporters.

At a Trump rally in Georgia earlier this month, people I spoke to said they would never accept Mr Biden as president and a few warned that this standoff could turn violent.
Mr Biden appears all too aware of the dangers as he decided, for the first time on Monday night, to attack Mr Trump for his failure to admit defeat and accept the will of the people.
