Fishermen relieved boats spared

(Pictures by Reco Moore) Social Share Fishermen breathed sighs of relief yesterday when they realised their vessels were spared the wrath of Hurricane Elsa on Friday. Those at both the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex and the Berinda Cox Fish Market in Oistins, Christ Church, said although the storm was rough, their boats were not damaged. At the Bridgetown complex around noon yesterday, some of the fishermen were seen removing ice from their vessels and cleaning. Long-time fisherman and owner of Lady Muriel, Harvey Corbin, said he believed the precautions they took by docking the boats in Bridgetown and placing tyres on the decks to cushion the blows were helpful.

Social Share Fish markets will be reopened effective April 19, with the exception of two. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy said in a statement on Sunday that Bridgetown Fisheries Complex in St Michael will open on Tuesday and Payne’s Bay Fish Market, Paynes Bay, St James will remain closed until further notice. The markets will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday Revised protocols will be in place to ensure the proper safety standards are met in the markets. Additionally, the Ministry has reminded the public and fisherfolk to continue practising all COVID-19 protocols as directed. (PR)
