World leaders were on Wednesday urged to encourage millions of girls into education to help transform their lives and boost national economies. With 100 days until the UK and Kenya host the Global Education Summit, the two nations reminded people of the event’s bold ambitions. Britain’s foreign office and Prime Minister Boris Johnson championed the education of girls as the key to preventing exploitation and unlocking their potential.
“In the next five years, the UK wants to see 40 million more girls in school and 20 million more girls reading by the time they are 10,” the foreign office said in a tweet on Wednesday.
Thailand, with its 70 million inhabitants, has so far come through the pandemic relatively unscathed, reporting a total of more than 42,000 infections and 101 deaths in connection with Covid-19. But there is a bit of a panic in the country at the moment.

Washington: The United States announced sanctions and the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats Thursday in retaliation for what Washington says is the Kremlin s US election interference, a massive cyberattack and other hostile activity.
President Joe Biden s broadside against Russia came the same week as he offered to meet President Vladimir Putin for their first summit an idea he reiterated in a speech Thursday, explaining that despite the sanctions it was now time to deescalate.

LONDON: Britain said it is willing to offer shelter to Myanmar s ambassador to London after he was ousted from his embassy by pro-junta diplomats.
Kyaw Zwar Minn met on Thursday (Apr 8) with Nigel Adams, Britain s Foreign Office minister for Asia, after his hosts said they could no longer recognise him as ambassador in line with the junta s decision to terminate his posting.

Myanmar s junta said yesterday that a protest campaign against its rule was dwindling since people wanted peace, and that it would hold elections within two years, the first timeframe it has given for a return to democracy since its February 1 coup.
Troops fired rifle grenades at anti-coup protesters yesterday in the town of Bago, near the main city Yangon, witnesses and news reports said. At least 10 people were killed and their bodies piled up in the corner of a pagoda, they said.
