Scientists discover unique life forms under 3,000 feet of Antarctica ice Updated Feb 16, 2021; STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Scientists have found life under 3,000 feet of ice in Antarctica. In a new study published in the journal, “Frontiers in Marine Science,” scientists from the British Antarctic Survey drilled through 3,000 feet of ice during an exploratory survey, according to a press release. When they lowered their cameras through the ice and then through another 1,500 feet of water, they accidentally found the creatures attached to a boulder under the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf a huge sheet of ice in Antarctica. Very few life forms have ever been observed in such extreme conditions: in complete darkness, freezing temperatures and without food.
