Cases of new coronavirus variant, mostly linked to U.K. travel, now reported in several EU countries, Japan, Australia Muri Assunção
A new coronavirus variant believed to be up to 70% more contagious than previous variants has been reported in countries across the European Union, Australia and Japan, as a number of EU member states get ready to begin vaccinations in the coming days.
Last week, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that a new variant of the coronavirus that could be “up to 70% more transmissible” had been reported in the U.K.
Even though the variant can potentially spread at a much faster rate, “there’s no evidence to suggest it is more lethal or causes more severe illness,” or that vaccines would be less effective against it, he added.
