“This new variant is highly concerning because it is yet more transmissible, and it appears to have mutated further than the new variant that’s been discovered in the U.K.,” Hancock said during a news briefing Wednesday.
Hancock said the U.K. is placing immediate restrictions on travel from South Africa, as well. Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have all stopped flights to and from South Africa.
Officials in South Africa said the new variant appears to be responsible for a new surge of COVID-19 cases and is potentially linked to higher rates of severe illness in younger people.

SINGAPORE: Singapore reported 29 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday (Dec 22), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.
It is the highest daily number of cases reported since Sep 21, when 31 cases were reported.

All 29 new cases reported on Tuesday were imported, and were placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon their arrival in Singapore, MOH said.
Three Singaporeans and a permanent resident who returned from the United States, Costa Rica, Indonesia and India were among the new cases.

A more contagious mutation of the coronavirus is driving a new surge of cases in the United Kingdom, sending ripples of alarm around the world and triggering strict travel restrictions that could reach all the way to California and the Bay Area.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson imposed tough new lockdown measures, saying that the mutation is 70% more transmissible than existing strains, with British Health Secretary Matt Hancock saying the variant is “out of control” through London and southeastern England.
A similar strain was also detected in South Africa, accounting for 90% of the infections in the country.
