Duterte made the statement after British Health Secretary Matt Hancock revealed that a “new variant” of COVID-19 was discovered in England where it had infected at least 1,000 people in the southern part of their country.
In his weekly public address aired Wednesday evening, President Duterte expressed hope that the new strain of COVID-19 will not reach the Philippines.
“Nabalita (It was reported) somewhere in Canada or in America na (that) there’s a mutant that makes it hard for the medical people to deal with the problem, doubly hard. I hope they would not land on our shores,” he said.

LONDON - London Mayor Sadiq Khan has called on the British government to consider shutting all secondary schools and colleges in London early before Christmas, following a surge of new COVID-19 cases in the capital city of Britain.
In a letter to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Khan said lessons should move on line now and schools should reopen later in January.
He said the increasing cases in London deeply concerning and there has been significant outbreaks among 10 to 19-year-olds .

Eight more Covid-19 related deaths and 329 new cases have been notified to the Department of Health.
This means there have been a total of 2,134 deaths and 76,776 cases in Ireland.
The figures also show that 196 people are in hospital with the virus, 31 of which are in intensive care, down two from yesterday.
There were 13 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.
The 14-day virus incidence rate per 100,000 of the population is 84.7.
162 of the cases notified today are men and 166 are women, with 64% under the age of 45. The median age is 37.
86 of the infections are in Dublin, 41 in Louth, 34 in Donegal, 25 in Limerick and 17 in Kildare.
