For the past several years, it has been official U.S. policy to support a “rules-based order” in the Indo-Pacific. These words rang hollow while Donald Trump occupied the White House. Joe Biden, however, has a chance to turn the rhetoric into reality. He should begin by removing one of the most egregious instances of hypocrisy and rule-breaking in the region: America’s support for British control of the Chagos Archipelago.

Florence Nightingale was a persistent advocate of the best means to prevent the spread of infectious diseases – frequent handwashing – and was a pioneer of evidence-based health care built upon the lessons learned from the high mortality rate of the Crimean War. She concerned herself with every element from the spacing of the beds and the surrounding environment to prevent infection. Meanwhile Daniel Filmus, who as Secretary of the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic islands and is responsible for the South American country s policy towards the remote archipelago, has suggested the decision leaves Argentina better placed to claim sovereignty of the British Overseas Territory. The decision means Falklanders will no longer receive commercial, tax and customs benefits from the countries of the EU27 after the end of the year.
