Fears for Covid vaccine drive if second doses clash with boosters

“The issue of vaccine take-up with young adults is a real concern. We need to get higher uptake in the 18- to 25-year-old age group to give us the high levels of immunity that we need as we move into autumn and winter,” said Doug Brown, chief executive of the British Society for Immunology. “The government needs to redouble efforts to engage younger people,” he added. “And they need to do that in ways that are more likely to influence them – for example, by using social media.” In September, the government wants 35 million flu vaccines delivered, plus second doses for under 30s, jabs for vulnerable 12- to 15-year-olds, as well as the potential booster campaign and a pledge not to leave behind any unvaccinated person who changes their mind.

Act now or NHS could be overwhelmed this winter, report warns

Last modified on Thu 15 Jul 2021 07.40 EDT Covid and flu threaten to push the NHS to breaking point this winter unless major precautions are taken over the summer, according to a report commissioned by the government’s chief scientific adviser. Sir Patrick Vallance asked the Academy of Medical Sciences to assess how the “triple whammy” of coronavirus, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) might affect the NHS in the winter and to make recommendations on how best to protect the health service. The report brought together by 29 experts, with input from a patient and care group, warned that hospitalisations and deaths from influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) could be double those seen in a normal year, leading to as many as 60,000 flu deaths and 40,000 children in hospital with RSV as the health service continues to battle Covid.
