A small whale has been stranded along the River Thames in south-west London.
Hundreds gathered at Richmond Lock and Weir on Sunday evening after the whale, believed to be a Minke whale – between three to four metres long, became stuck.
Videos showed it being hosed down by a man, while a vet performed a check-up at the river’s edge, before the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI) arrived at the scene to cheers at around 9pm.
A witness has told the PA news agency that “quite the crowd” watched as the attempted rescue took place.

PEOPLE have been warned to keep their dogs and children away from a seal spotted soaking up the springtime sun on beaches in Sussex. HM Coastguard Hastings said that, though the seal may look cute, they have a nasty bite and will defend themselves aggressively if they feel threatened . The marine mammal has been seen along the coast between Hastings and Pevensey Bay over the last few days. It is reported to be healthy, with regular visits to beaches in the area likely be to allow it to rest and digest its food. A HM Coastguard Hastings spokesman said: We are aware of a seal visiting our coastline between Hastings and Pevensey Bay.
