BPF launches Sustainability in the Plastics Supply Chain report

The UK’s leading plastics trade association, the British Plastics Federation, has launched its first sustainability report looking at wider sustainability initiatives from across the industry.
Sustainability in the plastics supply chain highlights the positive contribution the industry has made towards ongoing environmental issues, covering sustainable manufacturing practices, sector-specific contributions to sustainability and end of life management.
“It needs to be recognized that the UK plastics industry is a national economic strength,” said BPF Director-General Philip Law. “This report highlights the vast amount of fantastic work that has been done in recent years and shows how plastic is an irreplaceable material if society is to continue to reduce its impact on the environment especially if the UK is to achieve its target of essentially eliminating greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.”
Trade bodies across the supply chain have urged the government to create a compensation scheme for losses incurred due to the French border closure.
Heads of food organisations – including the Food and Drink Federation, the Fresh Produce Consortium, the UK Food and Drink Exporters Association and the Chilled Food Association – have written an open letter to George Eustice, environment secretary, and Grant Shapps, transport secretary, calling for immediate action for businesses caught up in the blockade.
Calamitous decision
“The decision of the French authorities – to ban accompanied freight on 20 December 2020 – after the announcement by the UK government of the new strain of virus has caused a calamity for many food and drink businesses,” said the letter.
BPF Highlights COVID-19 Impact on Plastics Industry’s Brexit Preparations
The Director General of the British Plastics Federation (BPF) last week gave evidence to the Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) Select Committee on the preparedness of the UK plastics industry for Brexit.
Philip Law highlighted the ‘heavy’ impact of COVID-19 on industry’s ability to prepare for the end of the transition period. He said that “63% of BPF members had reported that preoccupation with COVID has hampered their ability to handle upcoming issues with Brexit”. This was through the diversion of resources to deal with business interruption issues, the introduction of additional safety measures and staff absences due to isolation. Many companies had also repurposed manufacturing to produce essential PPE.
