Benchley, Special to the News Journal © Courtesy After the First Spanish occupation of Pensacola ended, British troops, followed by merchants and civilians, moved into the original Spanish settlement of San Miguel de Panzacola. That area, shown on this map, is now North Hill. Editor s note: This is the second of a series of stories that will be featured in the Pensacola News Journal each week leading up to the 200th anniversary of Escambia County. The First Spanish occupation of Pensacola ended with the 1763 treaty among European powers that awarded Florida to the British at the close of the Seven Years War. Spain was awarded New Orleans and Louisiana territory west of the Mississippi River. The Spanish and their mission Indian allies in Pensacola evacuated to Mexico.
