Over 26,000 people have put their name to a petition calling on retailers to source more British eggs
Supermarkets have been urged to stop importing eggs and to instead utilise the domestic sector for food made in the UK.
British egg companies and processors have launched a petition which has gathered well over 26,000 signatures as of Thursday 10 June.
They are calling for retailers to source British eggs as shoppers put their trust in UK supermarkets to sell safe products . British shoppers deserve to eat foods made with egg that meets the highest food safety standards, the petition reads.

Food Forensics said the partnership would help protect consumers, producers and processors from misleading labelling or food fraud
The Vegan Society has sought to strengthen its vegan accreditation through a new partnership with food and drink testing and traceability laboratory Food Forensics.
Launching today (25 May), the tie-in will see Food Forensics help identify any animal by-products or evidence of cross-contamination in tested products during the Vegan Society’s trademark certification process.
The Norwich-based UKAS-accredited business will use a next generation sequencing DNA test – an untargeted method of testing which seeks out DNA sequences in products and compares them with a database containing more than 500,000 species. This regime would be able to spot even the smallest indication of an animal product, The Vegan Society said.
