For 75 years, active-duty members of the British military have served as stewards at Wimbledon, the annual tennis “Championships” held at the storied All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club. Since 1946, uniformed men and women from the Royal Army, Air Force and Navy have volunteered at the two-week summer event by taking tickets, directing visitors to their seats, and bringing water to overheated fans.
A new fast-track visa plan to attract “the very best minds from around the world” in a bid to boost the UK‘s science sector after Brexit was unveiled by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson today.
Unveiling the plans of a shake-up of the British immigration rules on a visit to the Culham Science Center in Oxfordshire, Johnson said that he wanted to ensure the country’s immigration system to attract best foreign scientists.
The British Home Office and the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy have been instructed by the prime minister to work with the scientific community to develop the new visa route, which the British government hopes to launch later this year.
