U.K. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has been urging drivers to avoid travelling through the affected counties of Kent, Sussex, and Hampshire. Passenger ferry and freight transport was also suspended at the major ports of Dover and Portsmouth, leaving several thousand ferry travelers stuck.
More than 40 countries have now suspended transport links with the U.K. after a variation of the coronavirus which health officials say could be up to 70% more transmissible was found to be sweeping the country.
Medical experts say that the new virus strain is not more lethal than the original, and have expressed confidence that the coronavirus vaccines currently being authorized for use and deployed in Europe and the U.S. are sufficient to protect against it.

More than 40 countries have suspended travel from Britain in a bid to contain a fast-spreading new strain of the coronavirus.
Scotland had already closed its border with the rest of the United Kingdom.
Here are some of the travel bans announced so far.
– France –
France has halted all travel from Britain for 48 hours, including anyone transporting goods by road, air, sea or rail.
Paris and London are in talks over testing at ports to reopen the border, British Home Secretary Priti Patel said.
– Germany –
Germany is extending a ban on all arrivals from the UK and South Africa where the new strain has also appeared until January 6.

MEPs in the European Parliament warned that if they do not receive the text of a deal by Sunday they will not be able to ratify it before Britain leaves the single market on 31 December
The UK s chief negotiator David Frost said progress in the post-Brexit trade talks with the EU seems blocked .
He tweeted: The situation in our talks with the EU is very serious tonight. Progress seems blocked and time is running out.
Separately, a Downing Street spokesperson said it was very likely a Brexit trade deal would not be secured without a significant shift from Brussels.
