Myanmar s UK envoy says military attache occupied embassy | Military News

Myanmar’s ambassador to Britain accused a Yangon military-linked figure of occupying the embassy and barring him access, in an extraordinary diplomatic standoff a month after the envoy called for the military to release deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The latest development comes as the violence in Myanmar continues with at least 20 more people killed in the Sagaing and Bago regions, bringing to more than 600 the death toll from the military crackdown on protesters, the Myanmar Now news agency reported on Thursday, citing figures compiled by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). In London, protesters gathered outside the building in the Mayfair neighbourhood with the ambassador, Kyaw Zwar Minn, as reports emerged he had been locked out. When asked who was inside, he replied: “Defence attache, they occupy my embassy.”

Myanmar s UK ambassador barred from entering London embassy

1 minute read London, Apr 8 (efe-epa).- Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Kyaw Zwar Minn, had to spend Wednesday night in his car after his country’s military attaché refused him entry to his embassy and told him that he had been relieved of his duties. Speaking to reporters on the street on Thursday morning, Minn called the incident on a “coup” in central London and said the military attaché had asked embassy staff to leave the building. The ambassador said: “They are refusing me entry. They say they have received instructions from the (Myanmar) capital, so they are not going to let me in” to the embassy, located in the upscale Mayfair neighborhood of central London.

Sources told Reuters that his deputy had shut him out and taken over. Kyaw Zwar Minn said the staff was asked to leave the building by Myanmar’s military attaché, and he was dismissed as the country’s representative. In March, Zwar Minn called for the release of Ms. Suu Kyi and told the BBC that Myanmar was divided and could be at risk of civil war. Zwar Minn maintained that his remarks were not betraying the country while adding that he was standing on the middle ground. In response, the Myanmar government issued a statement saying he had been summoned home, but he stayed in London.
