NEW DELHI: India s vegetable oil imports jumped 9 per cent in November- December 2020 to 24.59 lakh tonnes due to advance buying by industry to beat the impending export levies by Malaysia, according to industry data. Import of vegetable oils during November- December 2020 is reported at 24,59,484 tonnes compared to 22,55,501 tonnes for the same period in 2019, Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) said in a statement. The edible oil marketing year runs from November to October.

Poultry owners not ordering feed owing to space constraint: expert
Maize and soya farmers fear that the bird flu outbreak will bring down the market price of their produce drastically with experts predicting distress sale as demand from the poultry industry is likely to come down in the next few days. The poultry industry is the main consumer of soya and maize and many private poultry players have a direct contract with farmers for supply of feed.
“Poultry and farmers have developed an integrated system and a supply chain. The bird flu scare has started impacting soya and maize demand. The demand for chicken meat has dropped by 15-20 per cent and poultry owners are not ordering poultry feed as there is no place to keep chicken,” said Vasantkumar Shetty, President, Maharashtra Poultry Farmers and Breeders Association.

KUALA LUMPUR: Amidst the continued allegations premised on the sustainability of the palm oil industry arising mostly from nationalistic sentiment to protect their edible oils industry, palm oil producers acknowledged that the sustainability issue cannot be ignored and they have to level up their game for the longer term.
But while most agreed to the notion, some believed that instead of addressing the issues in the west where the “noise” came from, the palm oil industry should just focus on its neighbouring market – China and India.

Export levies will be raised to a progressive system of $55-$255 per tonne of CPO, depending on price levels. It previously imposed a flat $55 levy on CPO regardless of price.
