As the June 22 primary draws near, the news stories, tweets, ads and other media surrounding the races for New York City mayor and Manhattan district attorney are ever-increasing in number. However, many people still do not know that while all registered New York City residents can vote for mayor, only those living in Manhattan can vote for the borough’s district attorney. As the Manhattan DA’s reach extends far beyond Manhattan, it is time to open the franchise to all New Yorkers.

A newly proposed piece of legislation in the state Senate could bar law enforcement agencies from hiring officers who’ve left or were fired from previous agencies.
The legislation, released May 3, came just days after the Schenectady County Sheriff Dominic Dagostino fired his stepson Daniel Coppola following a driving while intoxicated arrest in Colonie on April 26.
A Manhattan Democrat, State Sen. Brian Benjamin originated the proposal: “I believe police officers should be held to a higher standard because the nature of their power is so great,” he said.

ALBANY - The state Senate on Wednesday passed a series of new gun-control laws, the latest in a decade-long bid to have more stringent gun laws in New York.
The package of bills comes as lawmakers plan to end the legislative session for the year next week. With the bills passed in the Senate, it will then be up to the Democrat-controlled Assembly to do the same and then send the measures to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for approval.
“We must do everything we can to eliminate the scourge of violence that has cut too many lives short and devastated too many families, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, said in a statement.
