Last week Saturday, the second wave of the #EndSARS protest began in Lagos under the auspices of #OccupyLekkiTollGate, with more than 40 protesters arrested and dehumanised by police operatives attached to the Lagos State Police Command.

Although the sobriquet #EndSARS did not start recently, it gained momentum during last year’s nationwide protests against the now disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and police brutality in general. AT a time when Nigeria’s Armed Forces are stretched thin fighting Islamist terrorism in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and marauding Fulani herdsmen in the North-Central and South-West; the country should avoid opening another intractable theatre of conflict in the South-East. The General Officer Commanding, 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Usman Mohammed, told the Senate Committee on the Army last November that troops were currently deployed in at least 33 of the 36 states of the federation. They are carrying out law enforcement assignments because the Nigeria Police cannot be relied upon to efficiently carry out its constitutional duty of providing internal security.
It was gathered that the ongoing shake-up being carried out by the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Maj-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, will affect some other top military officers at Defence Headquarters, Abuja.
Though there is no official statement on the appointment yet but a top military personnel told our correspondent that the COAS said it was expedient to reposition the information units of Nigerian Army.

Boko Haram Terrorists Capture, Destroy Police Operational Vehicles In Borno
The vehicles were captured when the group attacked a police checkpoint along the Maiduguri-Chabal-Magumeri Road in Borno State. Chabal in the Magumeri Local Government Area is about 22km from Maimalari Cantonment, 7 Division Nigerian Army, Maiduguri.

Militants belonging to the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), formerly known as Jamā at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da wah wa l-Jihād, have allegedly destroyed two operational patrol vehicles the group captured from the Nigeria Police Force.
According to ISWAP in a statement sighted by SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the vehicles were captured when the group attacked a police checkpoint along the Maiduguri-Chabal-Magumeri Road in Borno State.

ON a day the newly-appointed service chiefs paid their first official visit to Borno State to assess the security situation, members of the Boko Haram sect invaded Chabal and some communities in Magumeri Local Government Area of the state, killed two policemen and abducted two others.
The terrorists, it was gathered, also seized two operational patrol vehicles and set ablaze another one on the Maiduguri-Chabal Magumeri Road on Sunday.
A source said: “The service chiefs are currently in Maiduguri for their first operational visit to Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole, since their appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“While in Maiduguri, they were briefed at the headquarters of the command and control centre, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, after which they visited the Borno State governor, Professor Babagana Zulum and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garba ElKanemi, to seek their support to end the more than a decade crisis.
