Study reveals four coagulation measures associated with migraine susceptibility
Nearly 15 percent of the U.S. population experiences migraine. One subtype of migraine that is not well understood is migraine with aura (MA). Individuals who experience MA often see flashing lights, blind spots, or jagged lines in their visual field prior to onset of their migraine headaches. Individuals who experience MA also face a heightened risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease, although scientists continue to explore why this correlation exists.
In a new study from Brigham and Women s Hospital, researchers used a technique in genetic analysis termed Mendelian randomization to examine 12 coagulation measures, uncovering four that are associated with migraine susceptibility. Interestingly, scientists only observed these associations in individuals who experience MA and did not observe such associations among individuals who experience migraine without aura (MO). Their research suggests that thes

Dr. Nathaniel Brooks, pastor of Greater St. John Baptist Church in Powderly, knows what impact tobacco products can have on the African-American community and he warns about the dangers.
“Menthol and smoking menthol … is a form of a demon that has created so much corruption, and it’s in a form of addiction,” he said. “Studies have even shown how second-hand menthol smoke is detrimental to kids in a household.”
Brooks will participate in No Menthol Sunday, an international observance day led by The Center for Black Health & Equity that engages faith leaders and their communities in a discussion about how to improve health outcomes for African Americans.

BOSTON While deaths related to heart disease have declined among older people, studies suggest that death rates among younger patients have remained stagnant or increased slightly. To understand what factors put younger individuals at higher risk of premature coronary heart disease (CHD), researchers from Brigham and Women s Hospital and the Mayo Clinic analyzed more than 50 risk factors in 28,024 women who participated in the decades-long Women s Health Study. Notably, women under 55 with type-2 diabetes had a tenfold greater risk of having CHD over the next two decades, with lipoprotein insulin resistance (LPIR) proving to be a strong, predictive biomarker as well. Findings are published in
