Roth did not know either of the claimants and had never employed them.Â
âWhen this started, Iâm like, âWow, this will be easy to correct,ââ he said. âBoy, was I wrong.â
Roth spent upwards of 40 hours over the next couple of months sending emails and faxes and making phone calls in attempts to get the claims approvals reversed.
âI just followed the directions in the letters, calling the 800 number or the 303 number, and couldnât get through to anybody,â Roth said. âIâd be on hold for a long time, and then the call would get dropped.â
After many unsuccessful attempts to contact the department by phone, âI was finally able to get a fax through,â he said. âThen I got letters saying that because I didnât dispute it, itâs been approved.â

Emergency measures to help struggling businesses pay less in unemployment insurance taxes while simultaneously granting more funding to the unemployed were voted out of the Maryland Legislature last week and await signature from Gov. Larry Hogan, R.
Raising from $50 to $200 the weekly amount of uncounted pay that unemployment insurance claimants can receive is among the measures, which come as the Maryland Department Labor continues to receive thousands of claims each week.
The department reported (https://www.dllr.state.md.us/employment/uicounty.shtml) receiving more than 12,000 new and reclassified claims last week, the lowest mark of the month.
