New Bedford Latin King member sentenced up to 40 months in prison

Standard-Times BOSTON A member of the New Bedford Chapter of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation (“Latin Kings”) was sentenced Wednesday for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition following an investigation into an armed robbery in New Bedford and a shooting in Boston in April 2020. Ramon Martinez, also known as “King Razor,” 26, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper to 40 months in prison and three years of supervised release, according to a news release from the state’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. In November 2020, Martinez pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Ex-New Bedford officer convicted of abusing a child released from prison

NEW BEDFORD Jean Gomes, a former New Bedford police officer convicted in 2017 of abusing a child, is out of prison and living in Florida, according to state agencies. Gomes, now 64, was released from a Massachusetts prison in September without parole, said Kate Silvia, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Correction, in an email. Gomes was initially sentenced in Superior Court in June 2017 to a mandatory minimum of 10 years in state prison after a jury convicted him of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 by a mandated reporter. Mandated reporters are required by law to report suspected child abuse or neglect to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families. Mandated reporters include teachers, social workers, doctors and police officers.

Victims of New Bedford, MA, Apartment Fire Identified – NECN

A firefighter was hurt battling the blaze and 40 people were displaced, New Bedford acting fire Chief Scott Kruger said Monday. The fire broke out about 5:30 a.m. Monday. Heavy flames burned a variety store and a bakery before spreading into two apartment buildings, Kruger said. Both of them caught on fire at about the same time, Kruger said. They were mirroring each other as far as fire was doing the same thing in both buildings, so early on, it presented a challenge. We needed more manpower.
