Black men are more likely to develop and die from lung cancer than persons of any other racial or ethnic group, pointing to severe racial disparities. For example, research has shown that Black patients are less likely to receive early diagnosis and life-saving treatments like surgery. Now researchers at Jefferson have found that a commonly used risk prediction model does not accurately identify high-risk Black patients who could gain life-saving benefit from early screening, and paves the way for improving screenings and guidelines. (Jenna Fisher/Patch) NEWTON, MA Four Newton teens students are among roughly 1,000 seniors nationwide who ve won a corporate-sponsored 2021 National Merit Scholarship award, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday. Around 140 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations financed the 1,000 corporate-sponsored scholarships. Massachusetts students represented 27 of these winners in the first round of National Merit Scholarships. New Hampshire students represented three of the winners, and Rhode Island students represented one. Many corporate-sponsored awards can be used for up to four years of undergraduate education, ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 per year.
