Fifteen test positive for COVID-19 in the Dillingham area January 21st |
Fifteen people tested positive for COVID-19 in the Bristol Bay region last week between Jan. 11 - 14. The Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation announced the cases on Friday.
Ten of the cases were reported in three communities around Dillingham, though not in Dillingham proper. Five travel-related cases were reported in the Lake and Peninsula area.
In the last 30 days, the state has reported 44 cases around Dillingham and 17 cases in the Bristol Bay plus Lake and Peninsula boroughs.
The health corporation has started to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to health care workers and members of the public in Dillingham, and it says a bigger rollout is in process. It urges residents to continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 social distancing, washing their hands, and wearing masks.

A long line winds around Dillingham’s high school gym. Thursday’s first group of people to get the vaccine are those 65 and older. After they get the shot, they wait on the high school bleachers as a precaution against any adverse reactions.
Norm Anderson, 68, got one of the first doses of the Moderna vaccine. He said the clinic is “timely and necessary, and that the process was smooth.
“It was wonderful, he said. The people were nice, everything was ushered right along in good time. Got the shot. People were friendly and nice, clean. And now I’m just in a holding pattern to go home.”

Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation will host a COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Thursday at the Dillingham High School gym, in collaboration with the City of Dillingham, the Curyung Tribal Council, the school district, and the state s public health team.
Vaccinations will be available for three different groups, including:
People age 65 and older;
those in the high-risk category; and
essential workers.
People 65 and older can receive vaccinations beginning at 10 a.m.
Those who fall into the high risk category can receive the vaccine beginning at 11 a.m. Those considered high-risk may have diabetes, chronic lung disease, and compromised immune systems, as well as people who are pregnant.
