July 13, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported, âWe will publish a full report of the Commencement Exercises of the Jonesboro Female College in our next issue, as we have not room this week. We will say however, that both teachers and pupils acquitted themselves in a manner credible to the extreme. The school closed with prospects for a bright future.â
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead. The city was spelled that way, as well as Jonesboro, within the pages of the newspaper.
July 13, 1871: One hundred and fifty years ago today, the Herald and Tribune ran an advertisement for A.J. Brown, who was an attorney at law, as well as a collections agent. Mr. Brownâs officers were located in Jonesborough. The advertisement further stated that âPrompt attention (would be) given to collections in East Tennessee, and Southwestern, Va.â
ABINGDON â Southwest Virginiaâs lone licensed cannabis products processor has a new owner.
Chicago-based Green Thumb Industries announced Thursday its acquisition of Dharma Pharmaceuticals, its production facilities and dispensary on Watauga Road in Abingdon. The local firm, which initially operated in the former Bristol Mall, moved to its current location in May.
Dharma is one of four state-licensed pharmaceutical processing firms in Virginia permitted to grow, process and sell cannabis oil products directly to patients with written certification from a medical provider. Dharma initially opened in October 2020. Other pharmaceutical processors operate in Richmond, Portsmouth and Manassas.
Jennifer Dooley, Green Thumbâs chief strategy officer, told the Bristol Herald Courier on Friday the company is constantly searching for expansion opportunities.
July 6, 1892: Readers of The Comet learned about several items of local interest. âA little child of David and Harriet Baker died the latter part of last week aged 15 months.
âGeo C. Potts, Vice President of the Watauga Company, has been for some time at Hotel Fairmount where he is expecting his daughter to join him soon.â
âThe bricklayers will begin work on the Reece House in the morning and will push the work until the building is completed.â
âIn the presence of the workmen and several spectators, Mrs. A.M. Reece laid the first brick of the new building, which is to replace the one burned and deposited beneath it in Italian detail 1767, and one of our pennies dated 1892, and by her act declared that Phoenix-like the old building should rise from its ashes.â
