Efficiently smuggling drugs into cells

Credit: © MPZPM, Salvatore Girardo Modern vaccines such as those against Sars-CoV-2 use tiny lipid spheres to transport genetic information into cells and let the body build up an immune defense against the virus. A team of scientists from Erlangen, Dresden, and London has now developed a completely new method to very efficiently deliver not only genes but also drugs and other substances into cells. The researchers from the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM) in Erlangen, the Technical University of Dresden, and The Institute of Cancer Research in London have named the method Progressive Mechanoporation and have now published it in the scientific journal

Indian SARS-CoV-2 variant shows enhanced host cell entry and immune evasion

Indian SARS-CoV-2 variant shows enhanced host cell entry and immune evasion A study conducted by researchers in Germany has found that the B.1.617 variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that has emerged in India entered certain types of lung and intestine cells with slightly increased efficiency compared with the original wild-type strain. The B.1.617 variant is the lineage thought to be responsible for the sharp rise in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases and deaths in India over recent weeks. The team – from the German Primate Center in Göttingen, the University of Göttingen Medical Center, the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and Hannover Medical School – also reports that the entry of B.1.617 into lung and intestinal cells was blocked following treatment with soluble angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) or the serine protease inhibitor Camostat.

EU project Progressus to tackle smart grids

EU project Progressus to tackle smart grids An EU-funded project called Progressus is currently addressing three challenges in the realisation of next-generation smart grids: efficient energy conversion, smart energy management and secure monitoring – especially in the context of growing electric car sales. The project consortium coordinated by Infineon includes 21 partners from five European countries, specifically Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Slovakia. The participants are pushing the development of future smart grid solutions primarily with a view to the upcoming, high performance requirements of ultra-fast DC charging stations for electric vehicles and bidirectional charging. The aim of the project is to research, design and develop future smart grid solutions that can be integrated into existing smart grid architecture concepts with minimal investment. The project, which is scheduled to run for three years, started in April 2020. In addition to the consortium
