The study grew out of prior research in the Nagler laboratory at UChicago on the fecal microbiota in infants. By transplanting fecal microbes from healthy and food-allergic infants to germ-free mice (who do not possess a microbiome), investigators found that the healthy infant microbiota was protective against the development of food allergies. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Jan. 19, 2021 – Spectrum Health West Michigan has hired James Moses, MD, MPH, as senior vice president of quality, safety, and patient experience. Dr. Moses will begin his new role in April. Dr. Moses comes to Spectrum Health from Boston University School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center, where he has served as chief quality officer and vice president of quality and safety. At Spectrum Health, Dr. Moses will develop and execute strategy, set targets and lead efforts for continuous improvement of quality, safety and patient experience. He will be responsible for integrating quality, safety and patient experience through collaborative leadership and targeted initiatives across Spectrum Health West Michigan.

A new study by researchers at the University of Chicago and the City College of New York (CCNY) has identified a unique, genetic mimicry switch that determines whether or not male and female Elymnias hypermnestra palmflies mimic the same or different species of butterflies. The results indicate that sexual dimorphism has repeatedly emerged in different palmfly populations, and linked the trait to a gene associated with melanin localization and regulation.

Every year, the University of Chicago honors members of the UChicago community who demonstrate leadership and a sustained commitment to justice and equality. In addition to faculty, alumni and staff, this year’s Diversity Leadership Awards also recognize the contributions of UChicago students.
This year’s recipients are Prof. Anita Blanchard, MD’90; Rami Nashashibi, AM’98, PhD’11; Jessica Jaggers of Chicago Booth; and UChicago students Nova Smith and Demetrius Johnson Jr. They will be honored Jan. 12 during a virtual celebration of UChicago’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration.
