Columbus election officials begin today processing affidavit ballots

Columbus election officials begin today processing affidavit ballots By Dispatch Staff Report • 6 hours ago Columbus election officials this morning began processing 158 affidavit ballots for Tuesday’s general election for municipal offices. The mayor’s race most assuredly hangs in the balance. Independent challenger Keith Gaskin finished election day with a 66-vote lead over incumbent mayor Robert Smith, a Democrat. Montrell Coburn, another independent in the race, garnered only 67 votes. Election officials can accept or reject affidavits, and candidates have the right to challenge individual ballots before they are opened and counted. Election officials will process each ballot individually, confirming a voter’s residence and eligibility, and contacting the voter if necessary. Representatives with the Secretary of State’s and Lowndes County Circuit Clerk’s offices are also present for the count.

Polling place confusion fuels high number of affidavit ballots

Polling place confusion fuels high number of affidavit ballots Even before election day ended with multiple races too close to call and affidavits still to be processed, poll workers and city officials were reporting an unusually high number of affidavit votes cast at the polls. At Townsend Community Center, a Ward 1 polling precinct, there were eight affidavits by about 3 p.m. and 15 affidavits at 15th Street Church, a Ward 5 polling place, by 3:20. And at the end of the night, there were about 35 affidavit ballots cast at Brandon Central Services, the lone precinct in Ward 6. Affidavit ballots are cast when poll workers cannot determine whether voters are registered or where their voting precinct is. The resolution board, which is appointed by the municipal election commission, then goes through the ballots to determine which ones are valid and count those.
