(CN) As India suffers a catastrophic wave of coronavirus infections and deaths, the World Health Organization on Friday highlighted South America’s persistently terrible situation as evidence that the pandemic has entered a new horrible phase.
The past week has seen the world register a record number of new infections and a steady rise in deaths caused by Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus rampaging around the world.
Since April 23, more than 5.8 million new infections were reported around the world with India’s staggering outbreak accounting for many of the new cases. Since the pandemic started, more than 151 million infections have been detected, though the number of infected people is undoubtedly much higher because many cases go undetected or unreported.

Italy will ban entry to travelers from Bangladesh

Italy will ban travelers from Bangladesh, the Italian health ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement said the travel ban would prevent anyone that has stayed in or transitioned through Bangladesh in the past 14 days from entering Italy.
The statement added that due to the worsening coronavirus situation in Bangladesh and India, stricter quarantine measures for people who live in Italy will be imposed, however it did not clarify details.
Some more context: India has now become home to the world’s worst coronavirus outbreak and fears of its spread across the region have prompted some countries in Europe to impose travel restrictions.
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has asked for $US1 billion a year in foreign aid to reduce illegal deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. But under Bolsonaro deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has soared, jeopardising the livelihoods of some of the world s most vulnerable indigenous communities.
