Brazil Raises $620 Mn In Huge Concession Auction

Brazil Raises $620 Mn In Huge Concession Auction By AFP News on April 10 2021 10:14 AM Brazil wrapped up a massive auction Friday for concessions to operate 22 airports, a rail line and five ports with a total take of $620 million and planned investments of $1.75 billion in all. The three-day auction was seen as a risky bet by some analysts, coming as Brazil reels from a new surge of Covid-19 that is weighing down Latin America s biggest economy. But President Jair Bolsonaro s government mostly managed to attract strong bids, seeking to show Brazil remains an attractive destination for private investors. Despite the pandemic, which has now claimed nearly 350,000 lives in Brazil, the government was keen to underline its committment to long-delayed plans for large-scale privatizations and concessions of state-run companies and infrastructure.

UPDATE 2-Brazil detects new coronavirus variant similar to South African

10 Apr 2021 / 08:59 H. (Adds COVID-19 numbers) By Eduardo Simões and Pedro Fonseca SAO PAULO, March 31 (Reuters) - Brazil has detected a new COVID-19 variant that is similar to the one first seen in South Africa, the head of Sao Paulo s Butantan institute said on Wednesday, as Latin America s biggest country notched another record daily death toll. Butantan President Dimas Covas said the patient with the variant had no history of travel to South Africa. The South African variant has alarmed public health experts as there are questions of how effective current vaccines are against it. Brazil is grappling with its own homegrown variant, called P1, which appears to be fueling a record-breaking run of infections.

UPDATE 1-Sao Paulo exhumes old graves to make space for surging COVID-19 burials

10 Apr 2021 / 09:01 H. (Adds Bolivia border closure) By Eduardo Simões and Amanda Perobelli SAO PAULO, April 1 (Reuters) - Brazil s biggest city on Thursday sped up efforts to empty old graves, making room for a soaring number of COVID-19 deaths as Sao Paulo city hall registered record daily burials this week. Gravediggers in the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha cemetery in the city s northern reaches worked in white hazmat suits to open the tombs of people buried years ago, bagging decomposed remains for removal to another location. Relocating remains is standard in cemetery operations, said the municipal secretary responsible for funeral services, in a statement. But it has taken on new urgency as Brazil suffers its worse coronavirus wave since the pandemic began over a year ago.
