The human costs of the current pandemic are clear as of 9 March 2021 there have been over 116 million reported cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide, resulting in more than 2.5 million deaths. What’s more, as people around the globe contend with the loss of family and friends, they also face significant changes to their social and political lives. The global pandemic introduced a range of challenges to interpersonal behaviour, liberal democratic values, and policy implementation. The initial comments by cardiologist Marcelo Queiroga, a day after he was tapped by Bolsonaro, dashed hopes for significant change in course to curb a worsening pandemic that has killed over 280,000 people in Brazil, which already had the worst weekly death toll in the world last week.
