Taipei, April 28 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed lower Wednesday in the wake of lackluster U.S. markets overnight, but came off an even earlier low, driven by ample liquidity, dealers said.
The bellwether electronics sector moved lower, led by major semiconductor stocks, while rotational buying bolstered select old economy heavyweights, preventing the broader market from falling further, the dealers said.
Market sentiment remained cautious throughout the session ahead of the outcome of a two-day policy making meeting of the U.S. Federal Reserve due later in the day, the dealers said.
U.S. Stocks Finish Choppy Trading Day Modestly Lower
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Extending the lackluster performance seen in the previous session, stocks showed a lack of direction over the course of the trading day on Wednesday. The major averages once again spent the day bouncing back and forth across the unchanged line.
The major averages eventually ended the day modestly lower. The Dow slid 164.55 points or 0.5 percent to 33,820.38, the Nasdaq dipped 39.19 points or 0.3 percent to 14,051.03 and the S&P 500 edged down 3.54 points or 0.1 percent to 4,183.18 after reaching a record intraday high.
Stocks initially lacked direction as traders looked ahead to the Federal Reserve s monetary policy announcement, although the choppy trading continued after the Fed announced its widely expected decision to maintain its ultra-easy policy.
Major Averages Posting Modest Losses As Fed Announcement Looms
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Largely mirroring the activity seen in the previous session, stocks continue to turn in a lackluster performance in mid-day trading on Wednesday. While the Dow has been stuck in the red, the broader Nasdaq and S&P 500 have spent the day bouncing back and forth across the unchanged line.
Currently, the major averages are posting modest losses. The Dow is down 149.31 points or 0.4 percent at 33,835.62, the Nasdaq is down 50.11 points or 0.4 percent at 14,040.10 and the S&P 500 is down 2.82 points or 0.1 percent at 4,183.90.
The choppy trading on Wall Street comes as traders remain reluctant to make significant moves ahead of the Federal Reserve s monetary policy announcement this afternoon.

Taipei, April 26 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan closed at a new high Monday as the bellwether electronics sector continued its momentum from a session earlier, while investors were encouraged by a rally among tech stocks on the U.S. markets at the end of last week, dealers said.
Buying focused on large semiconductor stocks amid optimism toward their business outlooks, while old economy and financials stocks moved largely higher to push up the broader market to the day s high at the end of the session, the dealers said.
U.S. Stocks Rebounding Following Yesterday s Pullback
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Stocks have moved mostly higher over the course of morning trading on Friday, partly offsetting the pullback seen in the previous session. The major averages have all moved to the upside, although the Dow has underperformed its counterparts.
Currently, the major averages are just off their highs of the session. The Dow is up 142.94 points or 0.4 percent at 33,958.84, while the Nasdaq is up 132.28 points or 1 percent at 13,950.69 and the S&P 500 is up 28.20 points or 0.7 percent at 4,163.18.
The rebound on Wall Street partly reflects the volatility seen over the past few sessions, which have seen the major averages show big swings back-and-forth.
