The move would reduce the amount of time students spend on buses and make enhanced cleaning easier to maintain, Hite said Thursday during district s weekly press briefing.
This change is not finalized. The school district will seek input from parents and create focus groups before making it official. We realize that making needed changes to bell schedules has many implications for staff, students and families, so we are in the process of getting input from school leaders, Hite said.
All of the Philadelphia schools that resumed in-person operations this year have been using this three-tiered schedule, including the archdiocesan and charter schools, Hite said.
The district released a proposed schedule this week that would move some high school start times to an hour or two earlier, some starting at 7 or 7:30 a.m.

School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. William Hite said the district is considering tweaks to the school start times.
PHILADELPHIA - The School District of Philadelphia on Thursday said it is exploring adjustments to next year s bell schedule that would narrow start times across the district and help improve bus routes to and from school.
During his weekly briefing with the press, Superintendent Dr. William Hite said the district has over 20 different start times for students. The district is considering a proposal that would make the school day begin at either 7:30 a.m., 8:15 a.m., or 9 a.m.

In the shadow of City Hall, they knelt on the concrete for 9 minutes and 29 seconds in complete silence.
Some wept quiet tears. Others raised their fists in solidarity.
All of them came to honor George Floyd on the one-year anniversary of his murder by Minneapolis police, to keep alive the fight for racial justice his death sparked last May.
“I’m sad to say, but nobody is coming to save us. We are the change that we’ve been waiting for,” said Ethelind Baylor, a member of the Philadelphia Labor for Black Lives Coalition, which organized Tuesday’s night’s vigil.

PHILADELPHIA - The School District of Philadelphia is planning to welcome all students back to class for five days of in-person learning for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Dr. William Hite, joined by Mayor Jim Kenney and Philadelphia Federation of Teachers leader Jerry Jordan, made the announcement during a Wednesday morning press conference at Spring Garden School in North Philadelphia.
