Kevin Brobson, from Montoursville, is the President Judge of the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court. He was first elected in 2009 and won retention to the bench in 2019. Brobson graduated from Lycoming College in 1992 and Widener Law in 1995. He was an attorney in the Harrisburg area before being elected to the Commonwealth Court. Two of his majority opinions are famous for later being struck down by the State Supreme Court. In 2017 he ruled that Democrats had not demonstrated legal standing for the creation of new congressional district maps due to “gerrymandering.” The State Supreme Court struck down the ruling and new districts drawn. This week s primary election for Philadelphia District Attorney was reasonably seen as a kind of referendum on the progressive prosecutor movement. (See this AP piece, headlined Prosecutor’s reelection pits reform against rising gun crime. ) Larry Krasner is seeking a second term after pushing a wide array of criminal justice reforms during his first three years in office; former assistant DA Carlos Vega had the backing of the city s police as he sought to dislodge Krasner during the Democratic primary.
Some polling seemed to suggest this could be a close race, but tonight it appears that DA Krasner has secured the Democratic nomination by a wide margin (and thus all-but-certain re-election in a deep blue city). As of this writing (around midnight), this election website reports, with over 80% of the divisions reports, Krasner has roughly 65% of the vote to Vega s 35%.
DA vows to pursue charges after case dismissed against former Philadelphia police officer who used pepper spray on protesters
A former Philadelphia police officer seen on video using pepper spray on Black Lives Matter protesters had his charges dismissed Monday, according to court documents.
Municipal Court Judge William Austin Meehan Jr. dismissed the case after he determined Richard Paul Nicoletti had not committed a crime, Nicoletti’s attorney Fortunato Perri Jr. said, declining to comment further.
Nicoletti had been authorized by commanders to clear a highway and was given pepper spray as a means of doing so, Meehan said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
