The PSHS extended its felicitations to Natalia Araña for winning The New York Times’ STEM writing contest.
“The Philippine Science High School System congratulates Natalia Araña, Grade 11 student at the Philippine Science High School – Main Campus, for emerging as one of the top 11 winners of The Learning Network’s second annual STEM Writing Contest organized by The New York Times,” read the PSHS’s post on Facebook.
Araña’s essay, “Mycowood Violins: A Different Kind of Time Machine” was declared as winning piece among the 3,741 entries. It was published in The New York Times on April 29.

Science News and The New York Times Learning Network are excited to announce the winners of the 2021 STEM Writing Contest. Eleven talented young science communicators are named winners based on their keen ability to shed light on scientific topics ranging from star polymers to space origami to singing finches.
In its second year, the STEM Writing Contest invited teenagers from all over the world to choose an issue or question in science, technology, engineering, math or health, and then write an engaging 500-word explanation that would be understood by scientists and nonscientists alike. A year after, schools remain closed despite the opening of a new school year. Alternative learning delivery modalities are currently implemented by the Department of Education (DepEd) in an effort to ensure that education will continue for over 26.6 million students under the K to 12 Program.
Classes in public schools for School Year (SY) 2020-2021 officially opened on Oct. 5. Some private schools were allowed to open earlier provided that they were able to comply with the requirements set by the DepEd on distance learning set-up.
Halfway into the new school year, parents and students continue to navigate distance learning as they take note of the advantages and disadvantages it brings.
