File January 20, 2021 DEFENSE Secretary Delfin Lorenzana assured on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, that there is no plan to deploy state forces inside University of the Philippines (UP) campuses.
Neither does the military wish to suppress academic freedom and freedom of expression.
He said he made this clear when he informed UP President Danilo Concepcion in a letter about the abrogation of the agreement between the Department of National Defense (DND) and UP effective January 15.
The agreement, signed in June 1989, prevents the police and military from entering UP campuses without any coordination with the UP administration.
Lorenzana reiterated this in a press conference Wednesday to debunk “malicious insinuations” that they will militarize UP.

“Walang tiyak na tauhang nangingibabaw.” This is a departure from the usual mold of short stories. What counts is the ability of the thought configuration and the clever use of words to capture and mirror the reality of the milieu. True, what people did during the Japanese time were nothing short of heroic. As one poet during Stalin’s time expressed: “No foreign sky protected me, no stranger’s wing shielded my face, I stand as witness to the common lot, survivor of that time, that place.”

Four days before Christmas, people woke up to the chilling video of a policeman killing a mother and her son in front of their neighbors in Paniqui, Tarlac. After thousands of deaths over the past four-and-a-half years, I wondered what made this one trigger national indignation. The video gave a clear answer.
Broad daylight. Several people watching. A crying mother hugging her son. At this point, the policeman clinically pulls out his gun. Shoots her point blank. Then shoots her son. He shoots them again, then walks away. All this as his young daughter watched.
