THE JUSTICE departmentâs cybercrime team has flagged the unlawful debt collection practices of online lending companies, citing the growing number of reports it has received.
In a public advisory on Monday, the Department of JusticeâOffice of Cybercrime (DoJ-OOC) said various laws prohibit these online firms from accessing the debtorâs phone contacts, posting their personal information, threatening them with death and physical injuries, and using profane language.
The advisory was issued âin response to the increasing number of reports received and endorsed to (the DoJ-OOC) involving unfair debt collection practices and cyber harassments by online lending companies.â

In a statement, the PNP-AKG identified the accused as Ramil Gara, who allegedly used his “authority and moral ascendancy over his student by threatening to fail her if she won t concede to his sexual pleadings.” Police said Gara was a Grade 12 teacher in a school in Caloocan City when he assaulted the 18-year-old student in 2017. The victim’s family took the case in court. Gara hid from authorities for four years. The PNP-AKG team conducted intelligence operations to arrest Gara.

PHILIPPINE BUSINESS GROUPS on Sunday said the impact of cybercrime could hit $6 trillion this year and up to $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, as the use of online platforms for financial transactions continues to grow.
The shift to online platforms “gave rise to heightened activity by cybercriminals,” the business groups said in an e-mailed joint statement.
“As reported by Cybersecurity Ventures, the impact of cybercrime is expected to reach $6 trillion in 2021 and rise to $10.5 trillion annually by 2025,” they said.
At least 25 groups, including the Bankers Association of the Philippines, American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, British Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Canadian Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, and the Chamber of Thrift Banks, signed the joint statement.

+ February 18, 2021 CHARGES of kidnapping, serious illegal detention and qualified trafficking in persons were filed online Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, against two Bakwit School teachers, three adult Lumad students and two Lumad elders.
The charges were filed by the Philippine National Police Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) before the Davao del Norte Provincial Prosecutors’ Office in Tagum City during virtual inquest proceedings held via Zoom videoconferencing app at the Police Regional Office Central Visayas (PRO 7) Wednesday.
