Peralta will hang up his robe on his 69th birthday on March 27 after 12 years on the bench, with the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) now searching for his replacement who will be appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte. “I cannot help but look back at my life’s work and feel a more than a modest amount of pride. I will retire without regrets knowing that I did all that I could for the law, for the courts, and for the nation,” Peralta said in a speech after receiving his honorary doctorate of law degree from Tarlac State University.

The House Committee on Revision of Laws approved on Tuesday, February 16, a draft bill that would institutionalize a Congress-attached “Code Commission of the Philippines” to compile and organize all of the existing laws in the Philippines for swift consultation and review.

The unnumbered bill, to be called the proposed “2021 Code Commission Act of the Philippines” consolidated the House Bill Nos. 2764 and 1550 filed by Cagayan de Oro representative and House Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez, Ako Bicol Party List Representatives Alfredo Garbin Jr. and Elizaldy Co, respectively.
“While our country has sufficient laws, they are not fully implemented, and are often violated because many of our fellowmen are not aware of the existence of certain laws,” Rodriguez said in his bill.
