Pandemic aid: Over 400K displaced tourism workers get cash assistance from DOT, DOLE

Published May 1, 2021, 11:35 AM The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced on Labor Day, May 1, that more than 400,000 tourism workers who lost their jobs due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic were approved to receive a one-time financial aid worth P5,000 under a joint program by the DOT and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said a total of 465,530 tourism workers were identified to be qualified beneficiaries of the DOT-DOLE Cash Assistance Program which has an allocated budget of P2,327,650,000 under the Republic Act No. 11494 or the Bayanihan to Recover As One Act (Bayanihan 2). SunStar + May 01, 2021 DESPITE experiencing a 7.9 percent unemployment rate in Central Visayas during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) 7 said they are now seeing signs of slow growth in employment this year. But PSA 7 officials warned that the unemployment rate in the region could increase again if workplaces fail to strictly implement health protocols to protect their workers from coronavirus disease 2019 transmission. During the PSA 7’s Economic Performance Report, Leopoldo Alfanta Jr., PSA 7 chief statistical specialist, said that as of January this year, the employment rate was 92.1 percent. Before the pandemic, Central Visayas maintained an employment rate of above 95 percent.

Published May 1, 2021, 2:10 PM The national government inoculated 5,000 minimum wage earners and Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as a tribute to the workers sector on the observance of Labor Day ,Saturday, May 1. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said the vaccinated workers belong to the priority group A4 or frontline workers in essential services which include commuter transport, wet and dry markets, food service, news media, education, specific government agencies, and overseas workers among others. “Today is Labor Day that’s why we made sure that we vaccinate 3,000 OFWs and 2,000 workers. I thank Secretary [Carlito] Galvez [Jr.], [Health] Secretary [Francisco] Duque [III], and Secretary [Vince] Dizon because they gave us the vaccines,” DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III said in Filipino during the symbolic inoculation program held at the Palacio de Maynila along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.
