NEDA backs increased volume, lowered tariffs on pork imports

Published April 15, 2021, 1:49 PM The proposal of the Department of Agriculture (DA) to increase the minimum access volume (MAV) of pork imports from 54,000 metric tons to 404,000 metric tons is consistent with supply deficit as estimated by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). (Keith Bacongco / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) Appearing before the Senate constituted as a Committee of the Whole undertaking a public hearing on food security issues, Thursday, April 15, NEDA chief Karl Chua assured senators that increasing the MAV and reducing tariffs in pork imports would not kill the hog industry. Chua’s position meets head on a contrary stand of most senators led by Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon and Senators Panfilo Lacson and Imee Marcos.

Lacson: Duterte is sensitive to public opinion if he recalls orders easing pork importation

Senator Panfilo M. Lacson (CZAR DANCEL / MANILA BULLETIN FILE PHOTO) ‘’Well and good if it actually happens. It would mean that the President is not impervious to valid criticisms against an ill-advised course of action that will bring more harm than good on all practical aspects involving the hog industry,’’ Lacson said on the possible reversal by Duterte of Executive Order No. 128. Lacson expressed hopes that the President would consider the plight of the “dying” local industry affecting 80,000 backyard hog raisers along with hundreds of thousands of farmhands and their families. He also reiterated the foregone revenues the government will deal with, especially at this time of the pandemic, due to the reduced tariffs.
