PhilHealth Spokesperson Shirley Domingo said that the pandemic has also affected their workforce which is one of the reasons why there is a delay in the processing of claims.
“Ang sinasabi namin, may delay po tayo talaga sa ating processing ng claims because pati PhilHealth naapektuhan rin yan ng pandemic na ito. Meron mga nagkakasakit, meron kailangan i-confine, meron kailangan i-isolate kasi na expose sila (What we are saying is, there is really a delay in our processing of claims because PhilHealth was also affected by this pandemic. There are those who get sick, there are those who need to be confined, there are those who need to be isolated because they are exposed [to a COVID-19 patient]),” Domingo said in a television interview on Thursday, May 20.
Private and government hospitals were forced to use their savings and borrow from banks to sustain their operations after the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation allegedly failed to pay the claims for COVID-19 cases since March 2020, the Philippine Hospital Association said on Wednesday.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 19) - The Philippine Hospital Association (PHA) is sounding the alarm on the alleged failure of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to pay hospitals their COVID-19 claims since the onset of health crisis.
During Wednesday s hearing of the Senate Committee on Economic Affairs, PHA president Dr. Jaime Almora said the huge amount of unpaid claims for COVID-19 reimbursements dating back to the start of the pandemic is among the major concerns hospitals face at present. This is now causing severe financial distress for private hospitals as well as government hospitals, said the PHA chief, adding one hospital s unsettled claims even ballooned to ₱1.2 billion.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 26) A group of doctors on Monday appealed to the Duterte administration to listen to the recommendation of healthcare workers on the ground who can truly see the COVID-19 situation before deciding on the community quarantine classification for May.
The Philippine College of Physicians and the Philippine Hospital Association have recommended the extension of the modified enhanced community quarantine or MECQ over Metro Manila and other provinces amid the ongoing COVID-19 surge.
Despite the slight decrease in daily COVID-19 cases, PCP Vice President Dr. Maricar Limpin said hospitals haven t seen the effect of the two weeks of ECQ then another 14 days of MECQ, so it s only prudent to extend the lockdown.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 25) –- A Metro Manila mayor backs the easing of quarantine restrictions in the region and neighboring provinces after observing some “social unrest in communities” amid unemployment and hunger due to lockdowns.
In a text message to CNN Philippines, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said she is “in favor of easing quarantine restrictions in the NCR Plus bubble to general community quarantine come the month of the May.”
The latest data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that the unemployment rate crept up to 8.8% in February, or equivalent to 4.2 million jobless Filipinos.
