A check on the House of Representatives website showed that the bill was sent to the Palace Wednesday, June 2, two weeks after the lower chamber agreed on the amendments made by the Senate. Marañon can either wait for Duterte’s signature or if the bill is not signed after 30 days before he can become a Filipino citizen. The 34-year-old striker of Philippines Football League champion United City has kept a patient approach even after the naturalization process encountered delays.

Football followers were wondering as to why Marañon’s naturalization was stalled after President Duterte signed a bill making Ateneo cager Ange Kouame a Filipino citizen earlier this week. But the Spanish-born striker of Philippines Football League champion United City opted to stay optimistic that his time will eventually come. “When I got the news, I know my papers weren’t on the President’s table so I was just waiting for him (Kouame),” Marañon said during his appearance in the 2OT podcast.

In a statement released on Tuesday night, PFF President Mariano Araneta said it was unfortunate that the papers of Mr. Marañon did not progress as hoped just as they were looking forward to adding the player to the national team in time for a key continental tournament next month. The PFF statement came on the heels of the naturalization of Ivorian basketball player Angelo Kouame being signed into law by President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Monday and announced a day later.
